WOF INSPECTION AUCKLAND
That little sticker on your windscreen is about to expire. And if you drive an Audi, VW, BMW or Mercedes, you’re probably wondering what the inspector will find this time.
We get it. European cars are brilliant to drive, but they have their quirks. A worn control arm bush, a tired sensor, a dash warning light that won’t go away. Any of these can turn a quick WOF check into a stressful afternoon.
At Vorsprung Automobil, we do things differently. Our WOF inspection in Auckland is carried out by mechanics who work on European vehicles every single day. We know where these cars wear, why they fail, and how to fix them properly without upselling you on work you don’t need.

Why Get Your WOF With European Specialists?
Any certified inspector can check your car against the WOF requirements. But not every workshop understands what they’re looking at on a German car.
Here’s the difference that makes. When a general shop finds a problem on your BMW’s front suspension, they might quote a whole new assembly. We’ll often know it’s a specific bush that’s a known weak point, and quote you for exactly that.
When your Audi throws a warning light, we don’t guess. We plug in manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment, read the actual fault, and tell you what it means in plain English.
That’s 15+ years of hands-on experience with European engineering, working for you.
What you get with us:
- Certified WOF inspections done to the required safety standards, with no shortcuts.
- Honest explanations. If your vehicle fails, we will show you the problem and explain the risk.
- Clear quotes before any repair work. You decide what happens next—no surprises on the total cost.
- We use genuine or OE-quality parts for all necessary repairs, fitted to factory specifications.
What We Check During Your WOF Inspection
The warrant of fitness is a safety check, not a full service. It confirms your vehicle meets the minimum standard to be on the road on the day it’s inspected. Here’s what our mechanics look at:
- Tyres and wheels. Tyre condition, damage, and tread depth. The legal minimum is 1.5mm across the main tread. Many European cars run wide, low-profile or run-flat tyres that wear unevenly on the inside edge, so we look closely.
- Brakes. Brake pads, discs, lines and performance. We also check the handbrake, including electronic parking brakes common on newer VWs and Audis.
- Steering and suspension. Ball joints, tie rod ends, bushes and shock absorbers. This is one of the most common reasons a European car fails its WOF test.
- Lights. Headlights, indicators, brake lights (including the high-mount brake light), reversing lights, and number plate lights. A single blown bulb is enough for a fail.
- Warning lights. Airbag (SRS), ABS and other safety-critical warning lights like ADAS must not be showing on the dash.
- Structural condition and rust. We inspect structural areas for corrosion. It’s less common on modern European cars, but older models and imports can hide it well.
- Exhaust system: leaks, secure mountings, and excessive visible smoke.
- Windscreen and wipers. Check for chips or cracks in the driver’s line of sight, and ensure the wipers and washers work.
- Seatbelts, doors and body. Belts must be in good condition and latch properly. Doors must open and close securely, and there can’t be sharp edges that could injure someone.
Our WOF Inspection Process
We keep it simple.
- Book online or call us. Choose a time that suits you. You can wait in our lounge or drop the car off.
- We inspect your vehicle. A certified inspector works through every item on the checklist. A standard WOF check usually takes under an hour, though the exact time can vary depending on the car and how busy we are.
- We talk you through the result. If your car passes, we apply the new label to your windscreen, and you’re on your way.
- If it fails, you get options. We’ll show you what failed, explain why, and give you a clear quote for the repairs. No pressure.
My Car Failed Its WOF. Now What?
Don’t panic. A failed WOF is common, and most issues are straightforward to fix.
Once your vehicle fails, you can only drive it to get it repaired or re-inspected, and only if it’s safe to do so. That’s NZTA’s rule, not ours.
Here’s how we make it easy:
- We can do the repairs on the spot. In many cases, we fix the problem the same day. Bulbs, wiper blades and brake pads are usually quick jobs.
- We offer a free re-inspection of any failed items if you return your vehicle within 28 days of the original WOF inspection. This means that, if you bring your vehicle back to our workshop within that period, we will reassess only the previously failed components at no additional cost.
- If you prefer, get the repairs done elsewhere. It’s your car and your choice. We’ll still re-inspect it for you.
We’ll never pressure you into repairs on the spot. If something is borderline and still legal, we’ll tell you it will likely need attention before your next inspection so you can budget ahead.
New WOF Rules Are Coming: What Auckland Vehicle Owners Need to Know
The biggest change to New Zealand’s warrant of fitness system in decades starts on 1 November 2026. Here’s what it means for you.
Newer vehicles get more time.
New vehicles will need their first return WOF at 4 years old, instead of the current 3 years.
Cars aged 4 to 14 years move to two-yearly checks, in phases.
From 1 November 2026, many light vehicles between four and 14 years old that were registered on or after 1 November 2019 will only need a WOF every two years. From 1 November 2027, that extends to vehicles registered on or after 1 November 2013. The date is based on first registration anywhere in the world, not just in New Zealand.
Older vehicles go annual.
Light vehicles registered before 1st of January 2000 will move from a six-month WOF to an annual WOF from 1 November 2026.
Driver-assist warning lights now matter.
WOF inspections will check that no warning or malfunction indicators are showing for Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist systems, where fitted. Most modern Audis, VWs and BMWs have these systems, and a faulty radar or camera sensor could now mean a fail.
Fines are going up.
The fine for driving with a WOF expired by more than two months rises from $200 to $350, and penalties for non-compliant tyres rise from $150 to $350.
Why fewer WOFs mean regular servicing matters more
Two years is a long time between checks. Brake pads, tyres, and suspension parts don’t wait for your next inspection to wear out.
That’s why we recommend a regular car service at least once a year, even if your warrant isn’t due. It keeps your vehicle safe, protects its value, and means fewer nasty surprises when your WOF does come around.
When is your next inspection due? Check the expiry date on your windscreen label, or give us a call and we’ll look it up for you.
How Much Does a WOF Inspection Cost in Auckland?
Our WOF inspection is a fixed price of $85 or $59 when done with a service. You’ll know the cost before we start.
If your car needs repair work to pass, we’ll give you a written quote first. We won’t do anything without your approval, so the total cost is always up to you.
Common Reasons European Cars Fail a WOF
After years of inspecting European vehicles, we see the same issues again and again:
- Worn suspension bushes and ball joints, especially on BMWs and larger Audis, where the front suspension carries a lot of weight.
- Airbag and ABS warning lights. Often caused by a faulty seat connector or wheel speed sensor, not a major failure.
- Uneven tyre wear. Alignment issues wear the inside edge first, where you can’t easily see it.
- Blown bulbs. Number plate lights and brake lights are easy to miss.
- Worn wiper blades—a cheap fix, but still a fail.
- Exhaust leaks. Flex joints and gaskets on turbo engines can crack with age.
The good news? Most of these are quick fixes when you know what you’re looking at.

No. A WOF checks minimum safety standards on the day. A vehicle service maintains your engine, fluids, and components to keep your car running well over the long term. Most vehicle owners benefit from doing both.
